Stuart Fails to Save the Universe gets July release date
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the upcoming Big Bang Theory spin-off, will debut on HBO Max this July, the streaming service revealed yesterday.
The announcement came during a comic convention in Mexico City, where stars Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie appeared on a panel. New concept art and first-look stills from the show were revealed, while an official Instagram account for the show, @stuartfails, also went live alongside the announcement.
The new sci-fi comedy follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom after he accidentally damages a device built by Sheldon and Leonard and triggers a multiverse crisis. With reality in trouble, Stuart sets out to fix what he broke with help from his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn) and physicist and resident pain-in-the-ass Barry Kripke (Bowie). Their journey will bring them into contact with alternate versions of familiar Big Bang Theory characters, though the title makes clear that Stuart's rescue mission is unlikely to go smoothly.
The series is a notable departure from the traditional multi-camera sitcom style of The Big Bang Theory, with a single-camera approach, bigger locations and a heavier emphasis on science fiction, fantasy and visual effects.
The first batch of images hints at the scale of the trouble Stuart has unleashed. The stills show the group in the familiar locations of the Comic Center of Pasadena and a Caltech lab, where Stuart is seen with the device, before moving into much stranger territory, including a war-torn setting patrolled by armed soldiers. Another image places Stuart and Denise beside a quiet lake, a brief moment of serenity amid the chaos, while a final shot finds Stuart, Denise, Bert and Kripke looking battle-worn.
It was also announced that Danny Elfman will compose the show's original theme music. Elfman, an Emmy and Grammy winner, is known for film scores including Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Batman Returns, as well as the theme songs for The Simpsons and Desperate Housewives.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe comes from executive producers Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, co-creators of The Big Bang Theory, and screenwriter Zak Penn. The first season will consist of 10 episodes, with the exact July premiere date still to be announced.
