Stuart Prime

Stuart Prime is an alternate version of Stuart Bloom who sets him on his mission to save the universe. He first appears in the post-apocalyptic reality, where he explains that the devastation was never supposed to happen and that Stuart can undo the multiverse catastrophe. As Stuart travels through different realities, Stuart Prime appears to guide him through a series of messages.

Stuart describes Stuart Prime as “the me I was supposed to have been”, but is unable to explain how this version of him already exists if Stuart was meant to become him.

101 “Spoiler: Gary Dies”

In the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Pasadena, Stuart Prime visits the comic book store and tells Stuart that they need to talk. He introduces himself as Stuart from “another stream of reality” and proves his identity by recalling what happened at Stuart’s senior prom.

With little time to explain, Stuart Prime tells Stuart that Leonard Hofstadter, Sheldon Cooper and Howard Wolowitz constructed a quantum-entanglement device at Caltech. Stuart was present when it malfunctioned, altering reality and triggering the violence, devastation and dimensional rifts that now surround him and Bert. Stuart Prime insists that none of this was supposed to happen and tells Stuart, “You can put everything right. You can make it the way it was.”

Stuart asks how Stuart Prime can be in this reality if he is another version of himself. Stuart Prime admits that he does not know, pointing out that he is not a quantum physicist. He tells Stuart and Bert that the device is still at Caltech, but Stuart wastes valuable time searching for a pen as Stuart Prime begins to disappear through a wormhole.

As he slips away, Stuart Prime’s final instructions are delivered in disconnected fragments: “When you get to the machine...”, “The important thing is...” and “And when you find him...” Stuart and Bert only hear his concluding remark, “And that will fix everything.”

102 “Spoiler: Zack’s in This One”

In the outwardly pleasant AI-controlled reality, messages begin to appear addressing Stuart. As Stuart, Bert and Kripke pass a bandstand, a plaque advertising a handyman service reads “Hey Stuart”. The guys fail to notice this.

103 “Spoiler: Bert is Magic”

In the magic reality, Stuart explains to Denise how Stuart Prime put him on this mission. Denise assumes Stuart Prime instructed Stuart to return to his own universe, but Stuart explains that the apparent goal is to restore Stuart Prime’s universe. The one that was supposed to have been Stuart’s.

When Denise asks whether Stuart Prime is just another version of him, Stuart answers, “Almost. He was the me I was supposed to have been.” Denise asks the obvious question: if Stuart was supposed to become Stuart Prime, how could Stuart Prime exist to tell him that? Stuart does not have an answer.

Later, after Stuart and Kripke visit Bernadette Rostenkowski, a message appears on a newspaper displayed in a Pasadena Daily box. Its headline reads “Hey Stuart Bloom!”, but Stuart and Kripke fail to notice it.

104 “Spoiler: Stuart Makes a Wallet”

In a seemingly idyllic suburban reality, Stuart has been released from a psychiatric institution and has come to believe that his memories of other universes were delusions. However, details of this reality, such as Kripke being his neighbor and Gary’s partner, cause him to question whether his new life is real. When Stuart leaves his house, messages on his doormat urge him to “Wake up” and ask, “Hello?”

Stuart feels inexplicably drawn to the Comic Center of Pasadena, even though he is a celebrated artist rather than a comic book store owner in this reality. After he enters the store, he discovers a copy of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. The cover features Stuart, Denise, Bert and Kripke alongside the vari-state quantum device. As Stuart takes the comic to the counter, Stuart Prime emerges from the back of the store and watches him before disappearing through a wormhole.

As Stuart reads the comic at home, it explains that Leonard, Sheldon and Howard constructed a vari-state quantum entanglement device at Caltech. Stuart stopped by that day to share the news of a clean colonoscopy and accidentally knocked the device from the table, entangling himself with the fate of the universe from that moment on. The comic reveals that messages have been sent to help Stuart, but that he has repeatedly failed to notice them.

The comic instructs Stuart to escape from this “prison” and promises that more directions will follow. A mail-order advertisement at the back of the comic allows him to obtain a vari-state quantum interference device. After Stuart activates it, he and Denise awaken bald in slime-filled pods alongside Bert and Kripke. Stuart realizes that this Matrix-like scene is another attempt to deceive him, and the group ultimately find the device and escape to a new reality.

105 “Spoiler: Bert Gets Married”

By the time the group reaches the tropical island reality, Stuart understands that someone is sending messages to help him on his journey. When part of the vari-state quantum interference device burns out, he hopes that whoever is sending them will find a way to communicate even in a world without modern technology.

After Stuart and Denise encounter a local woman searching through bear shit, Stuart realizes that a message in this reality might be delivered through animal droppings. He eventually finds the instruction “Use red quartz”, which enables him to repair the device and transport the group to another reality.
